Biturbo 228 and 228i

Built to satisfy traditional Maserati customers.  At the launch in 1984, the 228 offered dual ignition (two spark plugs per cylinder) and four valves with a liquid cooled turbocharger.  Only the turbo cooling system went into production and it wasn't until 1988 that the 4 valve head reappeared in the two litre version in the Maserati range.  Production of the 228 was therefore with a 3 OHV set up, a two barrel Weber and the 2.8 litre motor.   Electronic injection was introduced with the 228i and the compression dropped to provide slightly reduced performance.
